Cam & CJ roast them, and ask questions the audience has written down, turning the topics into jokes.

WASTOID– undoubtedly one of the Charlotte hardcore/ DIY scene’s most beloved and recognizable bands. With three Spotify album releases in 2022, including Government Sanctioned Weaponized Fem Boys, Burnt Out Wastoid Gutter Demon, and a live album, LIVESTOID, the band marries hardcore, punk, and experimental elements to create a versatile sound; one that is at times distorted, heavy, and shouted, and at others, ambient and melodic. But while Wastoid’s hardcore sound and energy distinguish the band musically, it’s their heavy and spirited live performances—and the lively and engaged crowds drawn around them—that have won them their beloved status in the local Charlotte DIY/underground scene. A Wastoid show means a crowd that will fill up an entire venue or outside patio, kids flocking in a circling crowd full of elbow bumping, jumping, and letting loose—at some point throughout the set, you’re guaranteed to see kids backflipping through a crowd, rolling on hard concrete in the midst of stomping black shoes on cement pavement, and, of course, crowd surfing.

 is an accordionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. His solo compositions focus on processed accordion, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His debut record, “A Hole in the Fence” was released in 2021 on American Dreams, and utilized a minimal palette of accordions processed through pedals to create glacial soundscapes and odes to hidden worlds. On his latest record, and first for Western Vinyl, “On a Painted Ocean”, he expands his sonic tools to include lush synths, droning pipe organs, and spirited horns, creating a vibrant journey from solitary stillness to community exuberance. The record also follows last year’s “Rain on the Road”, a collaborative album with harpist Mary Lattimore, released on Thrill Jockey.

Prior to releasing music under his own name, McClements had been a touring member of Weyes Blood, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Dark Dark Dark, as well as leading New Orleans art-punk brass ensemble Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? and one man band Lonesome Leash.

Upcoming record On a Painted Ocean will be out April 2025 on Western Vinyl.

 are here to have a good time, and part of that process includes getting the bad stuff off their chest. How do you balance an at-times ridiculous approach with heavy subjects? “Honestly it's kind of a way to make those topics more digestible,” said singer Faith Callaway. “They are so serious, and especially live. I'm always down in the crowd and it's pretty aggressive because I'm screaming in your face, but then I always follow it with a giant smile, you know?”
The Chicago five-piece are goofy and loud and not afraid to get dirty—arguably more literally than most. Callaway, guitarist Will Sallee, and saxophonist Tyler Meneese formed the band while picking soil out from under their fingernails during their day jobs as landscapers, quickly bonding over their love of high-octane music, cheeky convos, and a need to push for better societal growth. Edging is both an expected double entendre in regards to its risque sexual reference, and an unexpected double entendre when it comes to its family-friendly gardening term. It’s form-fitting for a band of proud, hands-on punks.

Forming in South Florida with the intention to record a short EP and play one show, Gouge Away were driven by the need to write music and take a stab at topics they weren’t hearing in their local scene. They were influenced by bands like Fugazi, Unwound, The Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Paint it Black.

A couple years later, they put out “, Dies” on local label, Eighty-Sixed Records, which they didn’t expect to reach beyond their hometown. After some touring, they released “Burnt Sugar” on Deathwish Inc. in 2018 which naturally took a more personal approach when Christina Michelle was dealing with her mom’s heart complications and misdiagnoses. Following the release of the album, they toured extensively throughout the US and beyond. While on tour and in their small pockets of downtime, they eagerly wrote and demoed songs for a third album, pulling influence not only from the nostalgia of the bands they grew up listening to, but developing and pushing the sense of urgency, noise, and introspective lyrics they felt most represented them.

Touring came to a halt in 2020, canceling a full year of plans in an instant. Gouge Away took time for themselves to move to different parts of the country and focus on their personal lives. On New Years Eve just beginning 2022, they decided it was time to revisit their demoed material, and to do it justice by allowing it to see the light of day.

They recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East in March 2023, completely analog to tape and almost entirely live, without the use of a computer. The goal was to sound like five friends playing music in a room together, unpolished and far from being over-produced, which is what the heart of Gouge Away has always been.

Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles-based group LAKE has been an indie rock institution since their formation in 2005, bringing endlessly curious musical exploration to their distinctive brand of soft rock.

Today, the trio of multi-instrumentalists Ashley Eriksson, Eli Moore, and Andrew Dorsett continue a singular path with their most recent LP Roundelay on Seattle label OFF TEMPO, adding Balkan and British folk rock influences, odd time signatures, and adult contemporary aesthetic to their already singular sound: whispered lead vocals, gentle romanticism and sly funk.

It was fellow Northwest recording artist Karl Blau (now Philadelphia-based) who became the band's first producer and champion through his subscription-based underground music series KELP. In 2010, the band found a wider audience when Eriksson contributed "Island Song (Come Along With Me)" to the end credits of the hit Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. 

In their now almost 20-year-long career, they have released a series of consistently classic albums, including four LPs on seminal Olympia-based label K Records.

Conspicuously idiosyncratic, the "LAKE sound" has slipped through a handful of genre designations even as it has evolved from early influences, ranging from avant-garde and indie-pop to "experimental pop" and "elevator punk" (an invented genre based on a joke from a friend of the band.)

Their new album, Bucolic Gone, will be out March 7, 2025 on Don Giovanni Records.

Mamalarky’s tenderly tangled indie rock has the internal logic of ridiculous jokes shared between band members after spending weeks on the road together. The sum of friendships and collaborations dating back to their teenage years, the band melds flashy instrumental moves with head-sticking hooks and lovesick lyrics welcoming anyone into their private world. 

While Mamalarky are ostensibly an indie-pop group, they stand out from the laid-back melancholy moods of contemporaries with complex instrumental interplay that inspires lean-forward listening.

Kennedy Mann’s compositions strike you in the heart and linger like a bittersweet memory. Her latest full length, Maybe Tomorrow, arrived in October of last year on Julia’s War Recordings. But her journey as a songwriter began with Philadelphia-based band Highnoon’s first album, Semi Sweet (2019), a project consisting of homespun pop-rock tunes. She and her band went on to open for artists like Leith Ross, Horse Jumper of Love, and Frankie Cosmos. As Kennedy continued to write, she quickly became memorable for her poignant lyricism, tender vocals, and sharp melodic skill on stage and online.
